How Disability Tax Credit refunds work

The Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is a non-refundable tax credit: it lowers the tax you owe, but the government does not pay you any leftover amount. It helps you — or a family member who supports you — pay less tax. If you paid tax in past years, approval lets you ask the CRA to review up to 10 past tax years under Section 152(4.2) of the Income Tax Act.

For children under 18 who qualify for the DTC, parents also get the tax-free Child Disability Benefit (CDB) top-up. It is up to $3,480 per year ($290/month, July 2026–June 2027), paid straight into their bank account along with the Canada Child Benefit (CCB).

Estimates are examples based on official federal and provincial tax rates. What you get back depends on tax you paid, provincial rates, and the CRA's written decision.
