What it could be worth

Amount

$1,436/mo single + drug/dental/vision

  • Single person: up to $1,436/month (basic needs $825 plus shelter up to $611) — July 2026–June 2027 rates.
  • A couple with one spouse on ODSP: up to $2,148/month. A couple where both have disabilities: up to $2,416/month (July 2026 rates sheet).
  • Sole-support parents (parents who raise children on their own) receive a $143/month supplement while dependants are under 18. These payments stack with the Ontario Child Benefit.
  • Asset limits (the most you can have in savings and property): $40,000 for a single person and $50,000 for a couple, plus $500 for each other dependant. Some assets do not count. These include your principal residence (the home you live in), one motor vehicle no matter what it is worth, and all funds in an RDSP (Registered Disability Savings Plan).

Example: A single recipient paying $500 in rent receives $825 in basic needs plus $500 in shelter. That is $1,325/month. Paying $611 or more in shelter costs gives the full $1,436. Earning $2,000/month net changes little. After the $1,000 exemption, only 25% of the remaining $1,000 ($250) is offset against support, so the household keeps about $3,186 combined.

How it benefits you

  • Rates are now tied to inflation. July 1, 2026 brought a 1.9% increase. That is the fifth increase since September 2022, for a total of 22%.
  • Health coverage is built in for you and your family. It includes prescription drugs (you pay up to a $2 co-payment per prescription), dental care, vision care, and rides to medical appointments.
  • Working is encouraged. The first $1,000/month of net earnings is fully exempt (it does not reduce your support). Another 75% of everything above that is exempt too. Your income support falls by only 25 cents per dollar above $1,000.
  • If a job lifts you off ODSP, the Extended Health Benefit can keep your drug, dental, and vision coverage going. A $500 Employment Transition Benefit (paid once per 12 months) helps with the move to work.
  • The federal Canada Disability Benefit does not reduce your ODSP. It is exempt as income for social assistance.

What you need to qualify or apply

Eligibility

  • You are 18 or older, live in Ontario, and are in financial need. That means your income and assets are within ODSP limits.
  • You have a substantial physical or mental disability (a serious condition that affects how your body or mind works). It must last, or be expected to last, a year or more. It must also substantially limit your work, self-care, or community life. ODSP's Disability Adjudication Unit decides this part.
  • Your assets stay within the limits ($40,000 for a single person, $50,000 for a couple). Many assets do not count, including your home, one vehicle, and RDSP savings.
  • Financial eligibility is reviewed from time to time. Report income changes through your caseworker or MyBenefits.

How to apply

  1. Start the application online (you can save it and come back later) or through your local ODSP office. The Social Assistance Support Line (1-888-999-1142) can help.
  2. A caseworker looks at your financial eligibility first: your income, assets, and household situation.
  3. The Disability Adjudication Unit reviews the forms your health-care provider fills in to confirm your disability status.
  4. Once you are approved, monthly income support is paid on the last business day of each month. You report changes and manage your case in MyBenefits.
  5. If you left ODSP before to take a job, ask about rapid reinstatement. It skips a new disability assessment.

Documents you may need

  • Your identity and residency details, and information about your household.
  • Income and asset statements, such as bank balances, earnings, and housing costs.
  • Medical forms your health-care provider completes for the disability decision.
